It might not yet be time for boxer Vijender Singh to leave the ring

With reference to the editorial He’s on the ropes now (April 2), there is no doubt that Vijender Singh’s boxing career looks to be in jeopardy since news of his alleged involvement in a drug haul case has come to light.

However, it is too premature to suggest that “this is a real fall for the national sporting hero”. Charges levelled by the Punjab police against the Olympic bronze medallist are based on just circumstantial evidence. The media should not hold Singh guilty until the law of the land does. Singh is within his rights to be considered innocent until his guilt has been adequately proven.

A linguistic common denominator

With reference to Ajaz Ashraf’s article The UPSC leaves us tongue-tied (April 1), it is heartening that the government has withdrawn the discriminatory decision of restricting candidates from taking Union Public Service Commission examinations in regional languages.

Candidates from all over can now enjoy a sense of parity, with no one language having an edge over the others. It’s also essential that we don’t turn the tide against English because in a multi-lingual country like ours, only a politically neutral language like English can become it’s lingua franca. Moreover, one cannot discount the fact that English is our window to reach out to the world.

Changes here aren’t fast enough

With reference to the editorial The fast and the futile (The Pundit, April 1) it seems that activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal is being selective in his politics by raising a hue and cry only over electricity and water tariffs, while leaving out other essentials. Moreover, why did he mysteriously stop talking about his previous exposés that targeted big names?
