Child marriage denies victims their childhood and puts them at risk
With reference to the editorial An end to childhood (Our Take, October 17), it is appalling that half a century after social reformer Rammohun Roy fought against child marriage, India still has the highest number of child brides — almost 40% of the 60 million child brides in the world. Though there are stringent laws in place to tackle the problem, implementation has been lax. We need to create awareness on the negative effects of child marriage on girls and society. India must put an end to child marriage that denies girls their childhood and education and makes them vulnerable to domestic violence and sexual abuse.

R Miliband’s criticism of the Labour does not make him a Trotskyite
With reference to Farrukh Dhondy’s article Lots of smoke, but no fire (Moving Finger, October 15), the writer mentioned that Ralph Miliband was a Marxist thinker of the Trotskyite persuasion. This is an inadequate assessment of Miliband’s important contribution to Marxist theory. It is true that his publication Parliamentary Socialism: A Study of the Politics of Labour was a severe criticism of the Labour Party for its lack of radicalism but it was not a Trotskyite position. In fact, when he was disillusioned with the party and left it, he joined the British New Left along with EP Thomson and John Saville and later on became the one of founders of the New Left Review and the Socialist Register. Tariq Ali, a Trotskyite, wrote about Miliband on his death, that his “dislike of posturing and sterile dogma kept him away from the far Left sects”.

The BJP’s umbilical cord with the RSS was never cut
With reference to the editorial Cut the apron strings (October 16), it was the RSS that stopped former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from removing Narendra Modi as chief minister after the 2002 Gujarat riots. The fact that the BJP recently succumbed to the RSS’ threats and declared Narendra Modi its BJP prime ministerial candidate shows that the party’s umbilical cord with the RSS was never cut.
