The infamous Delhi gang-rape incident, along with several stories voicing the anguish of victims of sexual violence, were portrayed in a moving dance performance by the students of Delhi University recently. Titled Ab Bas (Enough Now), the choreographic act was presented by a troupe of 20 students from DU’s Kamala Nehru College as part of India Institute of Mass Communication’s two-day inter-college media festival, Vox Pop 2013.

The act mirrored the pain and pathos of a woman, recalling the harrowing December night last year when a 23-year-old was gangraped in a city bus, as well as many other days and nights of suffering that go unnoticed.

Dressed in a matching ensemble of flaming orange — reminiscent of moving fire — the group, in carefully co-ordinated moves and gravity-defying acrobatics, set the stage ablaze.

“When we perform, we feel both the joy that we as performers give to the audience, and also the immense pain that we emote to them. But it’s a painful experience for us because we empathise with these victims as women ourselves,” says Anmol Bansal, member of the dance troupe. The 10-minute theatrical dance act enacted the horrors that women go through in their daily lives, both in public and in private sphere. The artists also paid homage to the paramedic student, who was gangraped in a moving bus and eventually died of her injuries while undergoing treatment in Singapore on December 29 last year.

The troupe has also performed this choreography at the IIT-Bombay fest, Mood Indigo, and at other college festivals as well. “For us, the travails of a woman were more important, which we wanted to draw the attention to,” says Surbhi Kapoor, leader of the troupe.
