While many people might be busy with Krishna Janmashtami festivities today, a popular south actor and dancer is doing something special to mark the occasion. This weekend, Shobana will pay homage to Krishna with a dance ballet recital in the city.
Titled Krishna, the act will comprise classical, folk and contemporary styles of dancing. It will also touch upon some of the lesser-known stories from the Mahabharata, Krishna’s days in Vrindavan, Mathura and Kurukshetra.
Talking about the difficulties she and her group faced while conceptualising the act, Shobana says, “There are some facets of Krishna, like his image as a butter thief, a lover and a make-up-loving deity, that people connect with. But there’s a lot about him that is unexplored. It was a challenge to encapsulate his spirit as a philosopher, teacher, negotiator and lover in a two-and-a-half-hour performance.”
Interestingly, a variety of actors and artistes have collaborated to put this show together. For instance, popular actors from Bollywood have lent their voices to the dialogue-drama — Shabana Azmi for Gandhari, Konkona Sen Sharma for Radha, Nandita Das for Draupadi and Milind Soman for Duryodhan, among others.
Meanwhile, the Academy Award-winning Resul Pookutty has designed the sound for the production. “AR Rahman has composed the tracks for the act according to the mood of the scenes. The sound mixing is done by Resul,” adds Shobana.
Organised by Banyan Tree Events, Krishna will be staged on August 31, at the Nehru Centre in Worli, from 7 pm.
