In its third event in the city, Rajasthan Night at Blue Frog this time will play host to the gypsy dance of the state. Folk musicians and dancers will take to the stage on December 30 and display colourful legwork, atypical of the folk culture of Rajasthan.

“We have been getting great audience reactions from the Rajasthan nights in Mumbai earlier.  Every time we highlight the music. This time we thought of showcasing our dance,” explains Divya Bhatia, festival director of Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) that is held annually in Jodhpur. RIFF organises periodic Rajasthan nights at Blue Frog.

Song and dance
This time around, Senu Sapera, a renowned Kalbeliya dancer will be taking stage, supported by musicians on traditional folk instruments. Sapera, born in a quaint desert village outside Jodhpur, has been spreading the syntax of Kalbeliya, which is traditional gypsy dance from Jaisalmer, all across the world.  Her most recent performance in Hamburg was much applauded where Sapera held workshops later, teaching the nuances of the dance form to the people of Germany.

“Kalbeliya is a very lively danceform. You are celebrating the vast expanse and shifting moods of the desert people.  They travel looking for water and their song and dance encapsulates their journey, which is filled with adventure,” explains Sapera, who has been performing with groups like Musafir and Kawa Brass Band at some of the largest world music festivals around the world.

Besides Sapera, there will also be musicians from the Langa community, which mirrors the folk music of western Rajasthan who will be performing some traditional folk songs.

Rajathan Night will be held at Blue Frog, on December 30, 10 pm onwards. Entry Rs. 300.
