If you’ve ever felt you have not done your bit for the environment, then here’s your chance to change that. The city is set to witness a first-of-its-kind festival, which is powered completely by renewable energy.

Called SunPlugged, the festival will be on from January 18 to 20 at Bhavan’s College, Andheri. Conceptualised by environmentalist and writer Bittu Sahgal, the three-day festival is a part of Sanctuary Asia magazine and Deutsche Bank’s GreenKarbon initiative. It brings together young people, entrepreneurs, small businesses, artists and civil society to discuss and chalk out a plan for urban sustainability.

Talking about the relevance of renewable sources of energy in today’s time, Sahgal tells us that a change can be brought about only if people want to be a part of the solution. “That done, the purchase of energy saving devices is easy. Homes, housing societies, corporates and even municipalities can buy solar cookers and panels for lights, fans, computers, battery chargers for phones and torches. Many such sellers are a part of the SunPlugged event.”

The fest will also feature cultural performances by a folk dance troupe from Odisha, stand-up comic Anubhav Pal and theatre artistes Zafar Karachiwalla and Vikram Kapadia. Comedian Kunal Vijaykar will co-host a solar-cooking workshop with Cyrus Broacha. There will also be stalls on pedal power stations, terrace gardening and solar gadgets.

Ask Sahgal about the kind of response they have been receiving so far, and he says, “With help from Tata Power Solar we are actually powering a Blue Frog rock show this Saturday and an incredible Shubha Mudgal and Mala Ramadorai concert on Sunday. We are having a problem with how to accommodate the large number of people who have registered with  us. How can the responses be anything but overwhelming?”
