Here’s another chance to experience the Delhi Ibsen Festival in case you missed it last year. The nine-day theatre fest would stage adaptations of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s seven plays. Organised by Dramatic Art and Design Academy (DADA) in collaboration with The Royal Norwegian Embassy, the fest this year will also have international participants. “We have invited international directors to work with Indian theatre companies. The productions will be followed by a seminar with the theme, ‘Who is the Enemy of the People’, based on Ibsen’s play, ‘An Enemy of the People’,” says Nissar Allana, director, DADA.

The participating countries include Poland, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India among others.

Shubham Bhatia, a student of Ramjas College of Delhi University, is one of the directors from India. His play Jai Jawaan Party is an adaptation of Ibsen’s ‘The League of Youth’. The play aims to bring the attention of the audiences to reforms in the society by giving some important positions to the youth. Wlodzimierz Staniewski from Poland will be presenting an adaptation of The Master Builder. Sankar Venkateswaran from Kerala will be presenting an adaptation of When We Dead Awaken. The director emphasises on the power of human presence rather than the text, narration or action.

Anwer Jafri from Pakistan will be presenting Gurrya Ka Ghar — an adaptation of A Doll’s House. “It is an exercise in ‘contemporising’ a classic play, both in content and form without straying away from Ibsen’s ‘naturalism’,” says Jafri. Other participating directors include Ovlyakuli Khodjakuli, Anne-Karen Hytten, who will be staging Lady from the Sea, and Heisnam Tomba, who will showcase An Enemy of the People in his own style.
