All the Kate Moss fans in the city are in for a photographic treat soon, with an auction of Kate Moss photographs —Kate - The Collection kicking off in the Capital in April this year. Put together by German art collector Gert Elfering, the show will go to five cities around the world including Dubai, London and Hong Kong after Delhi. My research proved that Delhi has the strongest art market in India, says Elfering about starting the auction in the Capital.

Currently in town for a recce, the photographer says it’s a dream come true to go around Delhi with a camera in hand.I went around old Delhi on a rickshaw, taking in the beautiful sights, colours and smiling people. I saw less of starving poor people on the road, says the photographer who last visited the city 30 years ago with his father.

The lensman is surprised by the balance of old and new in the city. “Delhi has a mix of old world charm that you see at Chandani Chowk with so many people around that you wonder how people find their way through it without an accident. On the other hand are the modern high-tech skyscrapers in Gurgaon, he says. But I miss the bikes that I saw on the road last time. I could make an entire series on bikers — the sight of six to seven people sitting on one bike or big cans on the side, he says, enthralled by the Indian culture.

A seasoned art collector who has broken over 17 world records with a series of single collector shows in New York, Paris and London, Elfering is greatly inspired by the old world art and architecture of the city. India has been the land of Kamasutra and erotic Khajuraho sculptures. Even westerners look up to Indian erotica for inspiration. I think the previous generations in India were more sexually liberated than the present one. Something went wrong along the way, he says.
But the collector has complete respect for Indian mind-set. “We will be showcasing about 50 art pieces — mostly photographs and a few sculptures of Kate suitable to Indian sensibilities. No nudes or sexy pictures, he says.

Elfering is also trying to coordinate a special shoot of Kate in a desi avatar for the Indian auction. Let’s see how it goes. I can’t disclose much right now, he says. A lot of young girls in India follow her because of her independent carefree spirit. She is successful on her own tern in a male dominated world.
