Mumbai boasts of a rich theatre culture, and this is not true just of English and Hindi productions but also local languages like Marathi and Gujarati. This week, NCPA will organise the fourth edition of its Marathi theatre festival, Pratibimb. Conceptualised to reflect the best of contemporary Marathi theatre, and provide a platform for new talent, Pratibimb will start on August 2 and go on till August 6.

This year, the festival has a number of interesting plays lined up, including Satish Alekar’s Ek Diwas Mathakade. Talking about the event, director Nipun Dharmadhikari says, “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to perform in front of a tasteful audience, and we are looking forward to it. This particular play is different from the usual brand of writing. It’s satirical and thought-provoking at the same time.” Ek Diwas Mathakade is a story of two men and their search for inner peace after both lose their loved ones.

On the other hand, city-based Awishkar Theatre Group’s Dream Society has been exclusively written for the festival. Penned by Shafaat Khan, Dream Society brings crucial issues to the fore through the life of a writer who makes stories out of others’ dreams and experiences. “The judiciary and the society eventually prohibit him from trespassing into the territory of other people’s dreams. The writer is confused and has bouts of dementia. He can’t think of anything to write about, until someone asks him to write lies,” explains director Pradeep Mulye.
