Painting two sides of the same coin on one canvas is always tricky. If one gets it right, the message finds its voice, but if it goes wrong, the essence of the painting is lost. Artist Tanuj Bhramar takes up that challenge with his show, Magical Translations, which kicks off this week.

“Paintings are very visceral; one has to look at them and experience the emotions, the colours and the strokes. I try to express happiness, melancholia, regret and duality in my paintings”, says Bhramar. Alka Raghuvanshi, who will be curating the exhibition, adds, “An animal lover, Tanuj has spent long years in the lap of nature in Jharkhand and Uttarakhand where his close brush with nature led to an imagery that is rooted in the fauna of these regions. Tanuj’s painting  emanate calm balance and equanimity that exudes from within”.

In the exhibition, the paintings persuade the viewer to explore a little deeper and the connect is almost primeval as are the colours.

His use of reds, blues, and yellows along with black and green are simple in nature, yet the meaning out of them is complex in nature.

“I try to keep my paintings simple yet the complexity is inherent in them. It is not easy to strike a balance between simplicity and complexity. I usually have a figure in the painting so that the viewer experiences the painting through the character or object’s view,” says the artist, who plans to give away a percentage of the earnings from the exhibition to fund the education of tribal children through Vikas Bharti, a Jharkhand-based NGO.
