Pop art comes to town

Do you love to walk around Bandra’s Chapel Road just to glance at the quirky art on the walls inside the lanes? A pop art exhibition in town will now showcase the relevance of street art and pop culture.

Dadaumpop, a non-profit exhibition, has been brought to the city by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy, Mumbai and the Embassy of Italy. Aimed at promoting Italian art and culture in India, it will showcase the works of 27 artists that focus on New Pop, Pop and Dada Anti-Art and will reflect influences of Takashi Murakami. The artists’ line-up includes Nicola Alessandrini, Andy, Stefano Bolcato, Antonio Sorrentino and Cristina Stifanic among others.

Pop art as a movement emerged in Britain in the mid 1950s and later in the US. It employs aspects of mass culture, such as advertising, comic books, classical art and cultural objects. Curator Igor Efrem Zanti says, “Pop art is the true contemporary culture because it collects influences from different fields. It’s the culture of hybridisation, which I think is the concept of the future.”Getting the 27 artists together was a task. Zanti informs, “An exhibition of this kind is difficult because each of them have different needs, and you must respect their work.”

Zanti thinks it would be great to get the artists to do street art in Mumbai. Ask him why he brought the exhibition to India, considering street art is still in its nascent stages and he says, “India has a pop aesthetic and the works will appeal to the Indian public because they are recognisable.” The exhibition will also tour Kolkata, Delhi and the US.
