Every year, in the beginning of March, LitWorld, a New York-based non-profit organisation working towards global literacy, celebrates World Read Aloud Day (WRAD). It has now turned into a global movement, with participants in over 65 countries reading aloud on the day. This year, India will also be one of the participating countries in WRAD, on March 6. The Pomegranate Workshop, a venture that specialises in language, visual and performing arts, in association with LitWorld, will be organising the event in the city.

“We want to take the world of reading to every interested child and adult. We saw a great opportunity to do this when we heard about the LitWorld global initiative,” says Priya Srinivasan, director, The Pomegranate Workshop. “WRAD is about showing the world that everyone has the right to read and write. It motivates children, teens and adults to celebrate the power of words,” Srinivasan adds.

Pomegranate facilitators will trawl the promenade at Carter Road for any willing ears, and read aloud at the amphitheatre. The readings will be in English and Hindi, and will include excerpts from picture books for toddlers, short stories and contemporary Hindi poetry. “The primary aim is to spend an evening listening to stories and enjoying the process of reading aloud,” says Srinivasan.

There will also be other literary activities. One of them is Adopt A Word, where “participants will read through a host of English words that are not used anymore; and if someone likes a word, they will ‘adopt’ it and pledge to use it once every day. You also get an adoption certificate for the word,” says Srinivasan.

The event will take place from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm on March 6 at the amphitheatre on Carter Road, Bandra (W). Call 3295 6935 for more details.
