Item girls Sheila and Munni have lost their fans to SRK and Akshay Kumar this year, or so it seems at the city’s kite markets. Shopkeepers say that youngsters have been buying kites with graphics of their favourite movies and male actors, over Sheila and Munni, this Independence Day.

“This year, the Chennai Express kites are best sellers. I had a customer yesterday who bought four dozens of these kites just because he was a fan of this film. Bollywood bikta hai (sells) madam,” says Naushad Ali of Haji Kite Centre at Lal Kuan, in old Delhi.

“Jin logon ko patang baazi ke sath filmon ka mazza lena hai woh yeh patangey khareedte hain (Those who like flying kites and are also fans of films, buy these kites),” adds a shopkeeper at Ariq Bhai Mathura Wale. Asked why they aren’t selling kites with photos of leading ladies, a shopkeeper says, “Movies are centred around heroes. They have more fans. That is why their kites sell.”

Among the top sellers this year are the ones with photos of actors Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. Among the newer kites this year are those with black-and-white photos of yesteryear actors such as Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor, Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kumar among others. It’s called the ‘Evergreen Stars’ kite. “I bought this kite to pin it on my work desk. It has all my favourite actors,” says Renu Sharma, a buyer.
