As India marks Gandhi Jayanti on Tuesday, the younger generation will have new avenues to know more about Mahatma Gandhi, as new books available from this week will give a modern twist to his teachings and philosophies.

An illustrated version of Gandhi's book My Early Life, which was published in 1932, will graphically depict major events in his life through drawings and sketches.

"Gandhi wanted his teachings to reach school students, which is why the original was written in simple language. The new edition seeks to achieve the same," said Lalitha Zachariah, a Gandhi scholar, who has annotated the book. The book is available in city bookstores from Monday.

"Children today are distanced from Gandhi and his philosophies, but I am sure this book will catch their interest owing to the illustrations," said Zachariah. "The idea was developed when the Oxford University Press approached me two years ago," she added.

Another book pitched at the youth is columnist Sudheendra Kulkarni's Music of the Spinning Wheel: Mahatma Gandhi's Manifesto for the Internet Age, which will be launched in the city on Thursday. Kulkarni has, in the book, juxtaposed the Internet as a modern-day avatar of Gandhi's charkha. Gandhi crossword

"In my research, I realised that Gandhi's philosophies are contemporary and the Internet is realising many of his ideals such as universal brotherhood, peace and democratisation of knowledge," said Kulkarni.

"My objective is to get younger readers interested in his philosophies," he said. Kulkarni said he has also addressed the misuse of the Internet in the book, and has explained that net users should be guided by Gandhi's ethical values.
