The Jaipur Literature Festival starts next week, and now, almost every major metropolis — Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram — has its own such big literary fest. All but Delhi, that is. And so, a bunch of word lovers thought it reason enough to give the city its own start to official literary fests with a first-of-its-kind Delhi Poetry Festival.

Not that there haven’t been poetry-related events every now and then among small circles, but this one, through its bigwig presence — both from the political and literary circles, high-energy interactions, fun recitals, book releases and film unveilings, has a lot in store for anyone whose heart beats for poetry.

“We thought it was time Delhi did its own big poetry fest ... why should everyone have to rush to Jaipur all the time? So we got together many like-minded poets, both established and budding, some eminent personalities, and thought we should invite the city,” says Dolly Singh, co-founder of the Poets Corner group, the organisers. The day-long event is free for all, and the line-up also includes equal-participation chats on social media’s role in poetry, the evolving trend in verse-writing with regard to modernity and tradition, and launches of two poem anthologies — one featuring 153 poets across 13 countries, and the other, an anthology of poems by school students aged 15 and below.
