Party Girl, a first French movie, will open the A Certain Regard of the Cannes Film Festival. This is the most important section after Competition in the Festival, which begins its 12-day run on May 14.

The rest of the A Certain Regard movies will be announced in Paris on April 17 along with the titles in Competition and other categories.

The Festival will open with the Nicole Kidman-starrer, Grace of Monaco.

Party Girl has been written and directed by Marie Amachoukeli, Claire Burger and Samuel Theis. Produced by Elzévir Films and distributed by Pyramide Films, Party Girl traces the life of Angélique, a 60 year-old night club hostess who still loves men and enjoys partying. On an impulse, she marries Michel, a long-time client. The movie touches the highest bar of authenticity by roping in the real Angelique in an attempt to delve deep into a less known and hardly ever represented segment of French society.

The three helmers will form part of a group whose works will – keeping in line with the aim and motive of A Certain Regard – highlight innovativeness and talent discovery.

Pablo Trapero, Argentinean scriptwriter, producer and director, will preside over the A Certain Regard jury. He has had three of his films in this section, which, he said, “brings us grand masters, promising young talent, new countries and new forms of cinema.”

Trapero has had an illustrious career. His first feature, Mundo Grúa, received the Critics’ Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1999. His second, El Bonaerense, was selected in 2002 A Certain Regard. In 2008, Leonera, screened in Competition at Cannes. Trapero’s cinema portrays the harsh social and political reality in Argentina. With the feel of a documentary, his plots are quite similar to a thriller.
