Fashion designer Aki Narula will be opening his store in the city next year. Not his first in a career spanning more than a decade, yet, he’s as excited. “2010 has been a great year with so many different film projects. I haven’t had the time to show at a fashion week or open a new store. But
next year, I’m very sure I’m opening my store in the city. That might just give me a strong reason to stay put in the city, because film shootings keep me away from the city very often. But hey, I’m not complaining,” says Narula, who styled Katrina Kaif, Akshay Kumar and Akshaye Khanna for Tees Maar Khan.
The location for the store, the theme and other details are still being worked on. The designer also plans to return to ramp shows. “I have some big ticket Bollywood assignments. But I’m sure, if I find the time, I will definitely show at a fashion week next year,” he adds.
Busy year ahead
Narula has designed Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s wardrobes for Agent Vinod and Ranbir Kapoor’s look in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar. John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan will be flaunting his designs in Dostana 2. “We haven’t set a date for Dostana 2 yet. Hopefully, by the end of the first quarter, I’ll know the exact details of the characters and what they should be wearing. Right now, I don’t even know where the story is set. I designed clothes for Dostana keeping Miami and the young energy of the place in mind,” Narula states.
According to him, Agent Vinod is a new-age thriller and Khan’s look in the film reflects that. “His look had to have that attitude. It had to be witty and smart. Kareena, I’m sure, will inspire many girls to revamp their wardrobes because she looks a million dollars. She’s carried off my designs so well,” gushes Narula. “Ditto Ranbir in Rockstar. I think he completely fits the title.”
Next on my list
She’s a new-age fashion icon for me. She understands trends and knows how to mix contemporary with classic. She carries off every kind of clothing very well. She’s one of the few actors who actually has a great sense of fashion.
Konkona Sen Sharma
She’s so simple and real. I adore that quality about her personality. I’d love to dress her up in a movie some day. She’s at ease with whatever she wears and makes it all so believable for all the girls who like it simple but classy.
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
The clothes I designed for Preity (Zinta), Bobby (Deol), Abhishek (Bachchan) and Lara (Dutta) were all carried off flawlessly. That film gave me an array of options in terms of situations to design clothes for. But, above all of these, I loved what we did for Mr Bachchan (Amitabh Bachchan). We had done so much brainstorming on his look and the way he carried it off was amazing. It’s the closest project to my heart.
Her height, body structure and complexion work well for her. She’s versatile. She carries off a sari as gracefully as a western outfit. I designed clothes for her for Bachna Ae Haseeno and Housefull. She was a stunner in both.
We worked together on Bachna Ae Haseeno first. He was so cool with the outfits. He made them look great on screen. He completely represents the current generation of boys. He trusts my judgement and at the same time, has lovely inputs. I’ve incorporated some in my designs and they’ve just become better. He tries a different look in each one of his films, which is so admirable about him.
