We liked most of what we saw on the second day of Lakmé Fashion Week. Among the shows in the day, the dependable Sailex and young Sneha Arora stood out. Later in the evening, Troy Costa’s flamboyant show drew a lot of applause, especially when Nawazuddin Siddiqui hit the ramp as his showstopper.
What we like
The menswear designer drew plenty of applause, especially for the second (of three) section of his show, devoted to 1930s London. Colourful bow-ties, pocket squares and impeccable tailoring worked in his favour.
Valliyan by Nitya
Match-much was the mantra with models stepping out in four of the same accessory — two bracelets and two anklets.
Shehlaa by Shehla Khan
A celebrity favourite in no time, Shehlaa had a number of delicate net lehengas with embellished leggings underneath. This could very well spark off a new trend. Of course, the skimpy blouses that went with them are only for the daring… and the skinny.
Aside from the ‘Ken Ferns’ models have ferns on their heads’ jokes that were doing the rounds, we loved the initial few pieces that were inspired by moonrise.
Over the years, he’s emerged as a designer we can really count on to deliver at every show. This time, too, Sailex was bang on with a lust-worthy colour palette and a mix of flowy and structured power-dressing options.
We’d be in awe of someone who can wear these creations and make them look good. From the garish leopard prints to the generous doses of gold and lavish use of net, most of what we saw was unwearable.
Usually placed on our much-hyped list, this time the designer stepped things up with a vastly improved all-black collection. If the heavily embellished gowns aren’t for you, the capes and jackets can definitely pep up a formal look.
She showed one of the most wearable collections of the day, with pumping music and powerful ramp walks to match. Our prediction: the creations will be soon spotted on celebrities.
Fresh from her Gen Next showing in March, the young designer returned with an impressive military-inspired collection, with silhouettes very similar to her previous show. It was the styling that gave her pieces an edge.
What we don’t like
A sudden celebrity favourite, her show was eagerly awaited, but monotony let us down. There were some pretty pieces, but none to get excited about.
