Day 1 of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) was laced with the usual excitement as gate no 8 of Pragati Maidan saw a stream of fashion forward crowd, armed with passes and accreditation ready to witness ramp action.
Starting the day on a colourful note were designers Payal Pratap Singh and Anand Kabra. The day also saw flowy silhouettes by Goa-based Wendell Rodricks, a northeastern touch by Atsu Sekhose, and collections by Surily, Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Poonam Bhagat and designer duo Paras & Shalini.

The final show of the day may have started an hour late, but it was well worth the wait. The Indo-Dutch collaboration showcased designs by Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, Suneet Varma, Jan Taminiau and DIED (Diederik Verbakel, Marieke Holthuis). The designs married opulence with stylish craftsmanship. From elegant headgear, gilded outfits and sky-high heels, to
whistles from the crowd — day one closed on a high note.

Bringing a touch of good old punk rock to the ramp, Dutch duo Diederik Verbakel and Marieke Holthuis showcased printed silk dresses and tunics with eclectic illustrations. A model in gold makeup strutted the ramp, flashing middle-fingers to the shutterbugs.
Drawing inspiration from Gujarat, Payal Pratap Singh opened the fashion week with her debut collection featuring dhoti pants, salwars with short angrakha tops, and choli-inspired maxi dresses with gathered waistlines. Her studded, chained take on Kolhapuri slippers looked chic and comfortable.

Designer Anand Kabra’s creations in lime, gold, royal blue, ivory and red hues were inspired by courtesan Taramati and Sultan Abdullah Qutub Shah of Golconda. Dresses, dhoti pants with sheer kurtas, Nehru collars, saris with a centre slit, shararas and salwars were also showcased.

Spotting the front rowers
Bollywood actor Rahul Dev was spotted at the front row for designer Anand Kabra’s show. He told us that he also attended Payal Pratap Singh’s debut show and loved her fresh designs. Also spotted in the front row on Day 1 were politician Jaya Jaitley and Hrithik Roshan’s wife, Suzanne Khan Roshan.

A stumbling success
Showcasing amid thunderous applause and screams from the north-eastern fraternity in the audience, designer Atsu Sekhose showcased parkas in Eri silk, Assamese muga silk shirts, Mizo woven silk pants and Angami pencil skirts as well as shorts with traditional Manipuri weave. Though Naga model Esther Jamir stumbled on the ramp, she gracefully completed the walk.

A classic case of saving the best for the last, the concluding show of Day 1 featured  models in bejeweled turbans, dressed in opulent zardozi embroidered outfits by designer Suneet Varma. Varma showcased lehengas and dresses in muted palettes with quirky turbans.
