Master ji aur deep rakh do!” “Mujhe padded chahiye!” “Net use kar sakte hain kya?” “Matka shape ya ambee shape? Meri neckline pe kya suit karega?” Just some commonly heard phrases at a typical tailor’s shop in the city. For a bride, he is the most important and sought after man in the
wedding, sometimes almost more important than the groom himself!
With the ongoing wedding season, tailors, also called blouse specialists, are being flooded with orders. “Madam, don’t ask how many blouses I have stitched in the last one week. This time of the year is maddening for us. In the last one month, we would have stitched around 150-200 blouses. Necklines are becoming deeper every season,” says Dushyant Kumar of Lal Ji Tailors in Shankar Market.
From home delivery to express service, blouse tailors are giving a tough competition to popular restaurant chains in the city. “Clients are ready to pay even double for getting a blouse stitched in a day’s time. We are getting 15-20 orders per day with padded ones being the most popular,” says Madhu Sharma of Udit Creations in Mayur Vihar. Usually the price range of a simple blouse starts at Rs. 150 whereas a designer one costs anything around R300. And there is no upper limit.
The ‘darzi’ hub
A hub for such tailors is the M Block market in Greater Kailash 1. “Our timings are 12noon-8pm but they get extended. Girls come with all sorts of queries, but still prefer the traditional ones over others,” says Roshan of Roshan Tailors in the market. The little shop has a website too, with all the popular designs. Another boutique in the same market is Eves. “I think getting a passport is easier than getting a blouse stitched in Delhi,” says Kriti Dargan, a college student.
