On the opening day of Lakmé Fashion Week, strong shows by Nikhil Thampi, Ranna Gill, Anita Dongre and Gen Next set the tempo for the four days to follow. The previous night, Manish Malhotra opened the event with a relaxed, wearable diffusion line. Here are our picks.

Sheer pleats
Nikhil Thampi's Kathakali motifs are set to be a new rage, but what caught maximum attention was the all-net pleats in his saris. Very daring, very modern and definitely made to stand out!

Skirt over pants
Payal Singhal took the layering trend further by putting flowy skirts on top of pencil trousers. Team with a crop top (still very much the in thing), pulled-back hair and funky jewellery for maximum effect.

Mostly seen in the sari cupboards of Gujarati women, Anita Dongre took Bandhani out for a spin in her Jantar Mantar-inspired collection. Gota work took the print to another level. This trend is easy to follow.

At the opening show on August 22, the usually conservative Manish Malhotra displayed some very deep V-necks. On Day One, Nikhil Thampi took the same route with plunging necklines, made more risqué with cut-outs at the waist.

What we don’t like

The show had enough bling to have us reaching for our sunglasses, but the piece de resistance was the designer herself. The last model took to the ramp in a maroon net lehenga with some seriously bejewelled leggings underneath and a mask to match. Then as the designer's name was announced, the model calmly took off her mask and walked the ramp again… this time in her capacity as designer.
