Those who often complain that men’s clothing is stuck in a boring rut have one less reason to do so. Printed pants, the latest trend on the menswear radar, has caused a severe sartorial jolt, shaking men to step out of their comfort zones.

A serious favourite with the ladies, it has, of late, crossed over to male closets too. Printed pants are indeed the choice of those men who believe in making a memorable fashion statement.

“Printed pants for men are a development from the ’60s and ’70s, and promise a rather stylish and quirky style statement. They are definitely a more exciting pick than the average boring trousers. Geometric, Aztec, tribal and all-over repeat prints in small designs are the best picks,” says designer Ken Ferns.

Stylist Kushal Parmanand too gives this trend his nod of approval: “It’s a fun and young trend especially for men who don’t get to play ‘dress up’ enough.”

It is no surprise that celebrity endorsement is one of the main reasons for its climb up style charts. Actor Ranveer Singh is often seen pulling them off in a way very few can, and troublemaking pop star Justin Bieber is also regularly spotted in them. Grammy winner Ryan Lewis, too, was seen rocking a sharp houndstooth print suit at the awards ceremony earlier this year.

Getting it right
Parmanand advises building a strong story around the print. “Blend the print into your outfit. The idea is to avoid an overtly matched look,” he says. Designer Nikhil Thampi says, “First up, make sure that your pants are well tailored. It is best to keep the top neutral with colours such as white, black or nude.

This will basically balance your statement piece.” Wearing print on print is not off limits, but you have a potential disaster on your hands if not worn with the adequate dose of nonchalance and attitude.

Body basics
The most important factor with prints, especially printed bottoms, is to pick a motif that’s flattering for you.

“Let your personality and body type lead the print, and not the other way round. For instance, a big, busy print plays with proportions and makes you look larger,” Parmanand says.

“Smaller or medium prints take the focus away from particular body areas, while bigger prints are an absolute no-no unless you are in the best of shape,” suggests Thampi.

Staying event appropriate
Women wear printed pants everywhere — right from brunch and dinner to meetings.

So why can’t men? “Opt for a darker toned print (think navy, oxblood or dark green), worn with a solid coloured shirt and a jacket for a formal event. Team them with a fun tee and a cool pair of sneakers for a casual look,” suggests Parmanand.

But the most important accessory men need to top printed pants with is ample confidence. Shrug off any traces of self-consciousness before you step out of the house, and you’re good to go.
