Quirk up your lips

It’s official — lip art is the new hot trend in town. Indulge and experiment with the goodness of sugar and caviar art, or go for polka, stripes and studs that can glam up your look in a matter of minutes.

And, if you are bored of colouring your lips in your staple shades of reds and pinks, do them in two spunky hues. From international fashion runways to Bollywood divas — seek inspiration, innovate and join the lip art bandwagon.

Dual tone
LipsTo ace this hot trend, use two different coloured lipsticks that complement each other. To create the dual effect, brush up your colour knowledge, so that you can mix and match according to the occasion.  When going out for a glam party at night, innovate with contrasting colours such as tangerine and fuschia. You can apply complementing colours such as beige and blush tones for a more casual, day-time affair.

The first step of perfecting the look includes using a separate brush to fill up your upper lip, preferably with a matte hue. Use another brush with the second colour to fill up your lower lip. The separate brushes help in avoiding any kind of colour-blend issues. Once both the lips are filled in with the hues, use a lip primer or a transparent gloss to set the colours in.

Sugary sheen
Sugar crystals have a unique, unpolished shape and are perfect for decorating your lips in attractive ways. Coloured sugar crystals are also readily available in markets and can be used to create eye-catching lip art. Use a thick, heavy toned glossy lipstick as the base colour, so that the crystals can stick to your lips easily. If you prefer to stick to your favourite creme lippy, add a coat of gloss to create that sticky surface. After this, use sugar crystals of the same colour or create a crystal collage by adding a multitude of hues.

Even though the result is fabulous, we recommend the style only for your photo albums, and not for daily use.

Polka POP
Pucker up with the retro revival trend by bringing it to your lips. Use strikingly contrasting colours to make the polka dots visible. Polka dot stick-ons are available in various sizes at makeup stores in the city, but, if you want to be a DIY-pro, use good ol’ sticker bindis to create the dotted effect. To create a proper base, start with your choice of lip tint. After this, in a particular pattern, the polka dots are to be placed on the lips.

If you want to strike the perfect pose for your profile picture, you can even try your crafty hand with two varied textured lip hues. Do a matte base, and once it has settled in, take a thin makeup brush and draw the polka dots using a creme colour. You can also use the back of the lipstick brush handle in order to get your 60’s reminiscent retro polka dots.

BLAST OF SHIMMER
Glossy is only a part of being glamorous — in order to go the extra style mile, get your glitter on. Use bold colours to make a statement — from fiery scarlets, bright tangerines to even a fresh shade of mint or petal pink. Do the shimmer in the same colour to get the desired effect. The shimmer is to be put in an upward motion with light strokes. The lipstick that is used, should be glossy, so that the glitter sticks to it. Remember, the lips are to be complimented with a look that is not equally edgy and full of quirk, but more balanced.

Add an extra dash of glam with matching glittery footwear or a statement accessory.

Caviar COOL
Use colourful caviar beads to decorate your lips. As the trend has been around for a while now, the beads are available across cosmetic stores easily. Caviar lip art has fast evolved from the realm of nails to the lip department, so stylistas, do not tarry.

Start with a base coat of your hue of choice and finish with a sticky, thick textured gloss or lipstick to get the look right. Now, paste on the caviar beads to get the diva-look, just like singers Jennifer Lopez, Jessie J, Lady Gaga and reality TV star Kim Kardashian. Even though we love the mono-hued beads, you can also innovate with myriad hues. Make sure the beads are not cluttered in a  single area, as that will make it look patchy. Match your caviar nails to your lips to don the fashionista hat perfectly.

Studded STYLE
Studs and stick-ons are available in different shapes and sizes in the market. Inspired by the oh-so-cool punk rock fashion, nothing spells edgy more than studded lips. The studs either have a sticker at one end or the adhesive used for stick-on eye-lashes. Now, you can go all-out matte, since you have the glue advantage. First, define your lips with a lip liner, then fill in your lips with a matte lip colour of your choice.

Now, paste the studs on the drawn lines. When the rest of the space has been filled with the remaining studs, pucker up, show off your new bedazzling pout and give Lady Gaga a run for her money!

PERFECT YOUR POUT
*Exfoliation is a must to keep your lips looking fresh and pink. You can do this by gently rubbing a mixture of granulated sugar and coconut oil or honey on your lips.
*Always moisturise your lips whenever they feel dry and taut by applying lip balms. Carry a chapstick with SPF for daytime to prevent tanning. You can apply a mix of almond oil and coconut oil to your lips before going to the bed to prevent darkening of lips.
*Hydrate well to keep your skin as well as your lips looking supple and fresh. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.
*To get naturally beautiful lips, you must take care of your diet too. Include foods rich in vitamins A, B and C like green vegetables and juicy fruits.
