Style tips for men

So you didn’t play Daniel Ocean, People magazine didn’t name you the ‘sexiest man alive’ and you don’t get to walk down the red carpet at the Oscars with a sexy model-wrestler on your arm. But just because you aren’t George Clooney doesn’t mean you can’t run for the ‘sexiest guy at the workplace’ competition, if such a thing were to be introduced at the next team offsite. Follow Clooney’s lead and get that full-blown beard, or one of the other facial hairstyles Hollywood stars flaunted.

The full beard Ben Affleck shaved
off his beard after the Best Film win, but not before setting the facial hair trend of the season. Actors Hugh Jackman and Bradley Cooper also sported the look.
Getting away with it: Genes and a certain number of years need to be on your side. In other words, get it only if you get uniform hair growth on your face. Keep your beard tidy and the rest of your look sharp. Think Argo, not Tom Hanks from Cast Away.
Getting it: Hairstylist Aalim Hakim says, “The word ‘barber’ means beard in Latin. So you need a barber to shape a good beard. To maintain it, trim it with small scissors. You could also use wax or gel to keep it in place.”

The handlebar
Jason Schwartzman was one of the few men sporting a handlebar moustache on the red carpet this year. Then again, the brave have always stood alone.
Getting away with it: You don’t need to be a cop, or Ajay Devgn playing a cop, to sport a handlebar. It gives you a quirky look, so make sure you have the personality to match. Prepare to brave the stares on the train, and the bus, and the supermarket, and at work. And brush the popcorn away at the movies, please.
Getting it: “This one’s tricky. You need to let it grow long and shave from under the corners of the lip. Then twirl the edges upward,” Aalim says.

The white beard
Clooney’s past 50, but he doesn’t need Kesh Kala to get the hot girl. Maybe you don’t, either.
Getting away with it: A white beard says you’re comfortable acting your age, that you’ve got class, and that you drink single malt and leave the vodka shots to the boys.
Getting it: “The colour of your beard should blend with the colour of your hair. Tame the sides and keep the chin beard a little longer, just like Clooney,” Aalim says.

The pencil moustache
Vintage is cool again. Revisit the Clark Gable look with a pencil moustache and classic, side-brushed hair. For contemporary cool, follow Jamie Foxx’s lead.
Getting away with it: You need serious attitude to pull this one off. That means, in your head, you indeed are Clark Gable. Or Salman Khan from Dabangg. Also, don’t let the initial taunts affect you.
Getting it: “You need to use an old-school, single-blade razor to get the judgment right. The fancy triple-blade ones don’t work. Shave from above and below, leaving the moustache slightly above the upper lip,” Aalim says.
