Summer is upon us, and the city is sweating it out in temperatures that constantly rise above the 40 degree Celsius mark. So, armed with a credit card, we decided to head to the air-conditioned malls, and get back home only to trawl through the online shoppimg portals. We then put together a list of looks that are all the rage this season.
That is literally the case, mannequins in stores across the city have been bombarded with bubble-gum pinks, bright yellows and whites. Varsha Bhawnani, stylist and owner of the store, Vinegar, swears by styles that are breezy, and colours like mint, smoky pastels, rosy onion pink and bottle blue. “We have included natural techniques of tie-and-dye and dip dyes that create a cooling effect. You can also try cool stretch fabrics with tiny sequin details that are comfortable yet glam enough for events,” she says. Archana Walavalkar, fashion stylist and co-founder of stylecracker.com, says monochromes are big this season. “Go high-contrast with them, or colour block with pastels and metallic hues,” she says.
Summer may also mean deciding between trends and comfort, but you can opt for something that doesn’t mean compromising on either. While choosing a cool cotton shirt from Colaba Causeway or Hill Road is an easy way out, if you want to go high street, look for “citrus jeggings at Freecultr or high-shine maxi dresses and metallic tank tops at Forever New. Zara is also always bang-on with trends,” says Walavalkar. Bhawnani, on the other hand, advises you to play peek-a-boo with sheer jackets and tops that will help you cool off thanks to the transparent layer. “Wear them with neon racer backs or tubes. You can also sport drop-shoulder tunics, blousons with smocked neck lines that drop around the shoulders and summer dresses in quirky prints,” she says.
1) Gladiator sandals are back this season.
2) The safari shirt/jacket, easy to buy, easy to wear.
3) Kaleidoscope nails are huge as well.
4) Crystal clear plastic accessories, Make sure the contents of your bag are pretty inside see-through clutches and neon jello beach-totes.
5) Pointy wedge pumps; they are comfortable yet chic.
With increasingly up-to-date collections and the luxury of shopping from home, online stores might well be the most popular shopping destinations this summer. Other than 99labels and Fashionandyou, which sell stuff from retail brands, individual apparel stores like DoneByNone, Shopnineteen, Bhane and Zovi seem to have come up with interesting designs. Talking about the trends she has incorporated in her summer collection, Jyotsna Arjuna, head designer for DoneByNone says, “We are employing engineered fabrics that offer comfort and functionality. Textured lightweight cotton with a gauzy feel and lightweight hosiery will be used for top-wear, super stretch denim in bright colours will be used in jeans and shorts.” She adds, “We see the consumer buying a lot of shifts and bodycon dresses, pussy-bow tie tops, funky knit wear tops and an increased demand in coloured and printed jeans.”
