Crashes with a big bang

A new terrace bar is always good news. When we heard that this one has two open-air sections, we were thrilled. But the thrill lasted all of five minutes. 
The biggest issue any pub-hopping person would have here is the lack of standing space. The entire area is filled with tables. We had no option but to find a spot between tables to enjoy our drink.

An installation of empty beer bottles is the only striking feature about the interiors. The walls are a pale white.

We placed our order for two of their in-house cocktails. The bartenders, who were clearly overworked, served us a Roby Spice (R375) and a Robi Belly (R375). The first is a concoction made with whisky, ginger, green chili and lime juice. One fresh green chili was literally tossed into the glass on top. The spice reminded us of the classic Bloody Mary and made us wish we had just ordered that. The Robi Belly, served in a style usually adopted for Jägermeister shots, involves a shot of flaming almond liqueur being dropped into a mug of beer. It wouldn’t have tasted as terrible if the beer was even remotely cold. Telling the bartender didn’t help; he just disagreed with us.

Dissatisfied, we ordered the Long Island Ice Tea (R350). This time, the bartender had us fuming. By the time he finished pouring in the spirits, the shallow glass only had space for 3 ml of Coke. After we pointed out his ridiculousness, he tasted the cocktail and sniggered, offering no solution.

The food was the only saving grace. It helped take our mind off the irritating Sean Kingston song, ‘You’re way too beauuuutiiiful’. When we asked the DJ if he could do something about the playlist, he said, “I will play the latest music later at night.” Possibly afraid that he may run out of tracks, we’re guessing.
We ordered the Dynabites with Crisp Roesti (jalapenos stuffed cheese melts and crisp roesti served with chili mayo; R250), which got wiped out fast. The Diced Steak and Chips (R290) was worth every penny. The meat was well-cooked and succulent. The Spicy BBQ Chicken pizza (they first forgot about our order and then decided to serve us when we were ready to leave) was nothing out of the ordinary.

We visited this pub on a weekend. However, they have a great happy hours deal on weekdays that lasts till 11 pm. If you are looking for ancient music, a not-so-chilled pint of beer and you’ve booked a table in advance, then this is the place to be. Just don’t expect much out of their drinks and services which require some hard work. P.S. Carry mosquito repellent.
