No more flip-flap confusion over what you ordered for. Pick, click, and whoa, it’s on your platter. Restaurants in the Capital are busy adopting digital menus and training their staff to operate the hi-tech gadgets.
“Nobody wants to go through huge booklets to place an order. It’s so boring. An iPad menu gives you the option of looking at the pictures and description of the dish, and even customising it, all at a touch,” says Saurabh Khanijo of Kylin Premier in Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj, which serves its Japanese menu on the iPad. The Kylin restaurant in Vasant Vihar has an iPad wine menu.
“A digital menu is very user-friendly. Guests can even read reviews of dishes and drinks on it,” reasons Gary Waugh of Leela Kempinski, Gurgaon, which is set to introduce digital menus next month. “We’ll also have tickers that talk about special offers. We’re training our staff to handle it with care as a lot has been invested in the technology,” he adds.
iPads aren’t the only new menu carriers. Apple Touch and other android gizmos are becoming popular. “We use Apple Touch for our wine menu, as it changes frequently because of the new flavours and brands coming into the market, and their availability. It saves us the cost of printing a new menu every month,” says Nitin Raj, manager, Set’z in DLF Emporio. Fu in GK I is also preparing to go hi-tech soon. “We’ll be using an android device that will allow visitors to browse the net for more info on dishes, if they want,” says owner Gaurav Rekhi.
Some resto-bars, like the Beer Café in Vasant Kunj, have also come up with hi-tech facilities such as a smart-card operated beer tap, which carries your ‘beer balance’ to the next visit and can be topped up like the Metro card. “Each tap unit has an LCD display which provides info on litres remaining,” says Rahul Singh, co-founder.
