Global breakfast treads on…

Food lovers in the city can indulge in some of the most popular cuisines from across the globe, that too for breakfast. From a Chinese congee to a Japanese tamagoyaki omelette and from a Spanish omelette to French cocotte eggs and crepe, the city has a lot to offer. Here are some of the famous joints known for their Indian and Mediterranean breakfasts, along with varieties from the Far East.

Indian breakfast options
We give you the best of south Indian, north Indian, Maharashtrian and Parsi breakfast specialties around town.

Sabudana Vada at Prakash
The melt-in-mouth Sabudana Vadas at Prakash served with coconut chutney are so good, you can easily eat four of them in one sitting.

Butter Idli at Café Madras

Aloo Paratha at Paratha Mantra
Try the old-school aloo paratha at Paratha Mantra, served with vegetable raita and pickle. You can even combine it with a small portion of dal makhani or a glass of cold lassi.

Akuri at Ideal Corner; Kheema Pao at Good Luck
Akuri, the Parsi version of scrambled eggs blended with onions, garlic and lots of spice is delicious at Ideal Corner. If you really want to indulge, try their bharuchi akuri that’s made with a lot of cream, dry fruits, fried onions and ginger. Meanwhile, Good Luck in Bandra is one of the best places to stop by in the morning for kheema pao.

Mediterranean Breakfast
Mediterranean food is all about fresh produce and minimal cooking. While the French don’t care much about breakfast, Spanish breakfast items often spill over to lunch or tapas and there is very little distinction in their various meals.

Spanish Omelette at Pali Village Café and Otto Infinito  
One of the few places in the city that whips up the classic version, try the Spanish omelette made with potatoes and onions at Pali Village Cafe. At Otto Infinito, you can try a lighter version of this savoury sans potato. Packed with peppers, chorizo, kalamata olives and crushed pepper, this one also brings out the colourful flavours of Spain.

French Cocotte Eggs and Crepe at Suzette
Prepared with daily special toppings such as ham and mozzarella, ratatouille, creamed spinach, smoked salmon, fresh cream and tarragon, the French oven-baked eggs dish, cocotte, is served in two ramekins alongside the Indian pav, toasted with butter. Also try the croque matin, new on the breakfast menu — Suzette’s signature hot sandwich with two eggs, mozzarella and a veg or chicken topping.

Breakfasts from the Far East
Essentially Asians have a filling breakfast and different regions of South East Asia enjoy a variety of breakfast items. The Asian breakfast, much like the lunch and dinner, includes a variety of soups and noodles, but the morning versions are very lightly seasoned. In the city, we found some classics and some places with new twists to old recipes.

Chinese Breakfast at Frangipani and Fratelli Fresh
Frangipani offers fresh fruits, green tea and congee served with various condiments such as tofu, bean sprouts, boiled egg, sesame oil and soya sauce. Neutrally flavoured with ginger and shitake mushrooms, they also offer a vegetarian congee on their menu apart from the popular chicken congee.

Japanese Breakfast Bento Box at Café Prato
A rare treat for those who love Japanese food, this one contains a selection of koshikari rice, tamagoyaki omelette, gomaye salad, salmon in soya sake mirin, tofu, miso soup and fish nan ban.

Thai Rad Nah at Fifty—Five East and Thai Omelette at Fenix
Fried rice, noodle soup and omelette are usually enjoyed as breakfast specialties in Thailand. The rad nah is a soya bean-based soup with vegetables and noodles, and/or meats, fish, shrimp balls. The Thai omelette at Fenix borrows from the cuisine’s seasoning box. Containing chicken and prawns, this omelette is cooked with fish sauce, fried onions, spring onions, galangal (Thai ginger) and served with a chilli sauce for that heat smack.
