We were excited well before this new Japanese eatery opened, and now we’re even more eager to go back. Kofuku, which means happiness, kept us happy from the moment we entered. Replacing the comparatively dingy bar Firangi Paani, Kofuku has thankfully retained only the basic layout of the
erstwhile pub — a long bar across the entrance and two sections with tables — with the addition of a cute floor-seating section.
For a first timer, the menu — split into two sections — can be a daunting read with the Japanese names. Take your time or ask the staff for recommendations. From the sushi menu, we picked out the Philadelphia Roll (Rs 450). Eight pieces of delectable salmon, cream cheese and avocado rolled up in sticky rice reached us with not-too-strong wasabi and pickled ginger.
The other appetiser, Korokke (R380) didn’t fare so well. Two large, deep-fried, stuffed cutlets were presented to us, shockingly, on an oil-soaked sheet. The cutlets themselves were crunchy and tasted nice, but the oil was a major turn-off. For the mains, we tried the Wasabi Chicken (R450) and Pan-grilled Fish (R450) — both of which came only with creamy mayonnaise and a large mound of cabbage. We’d have liked the waiters to inform us that neither would be accompanied by rice. Having said that, both were delicious. The chicken was grilled to perfection and the sauce was just right. The fish too came in a delicious tangy, lemony sauce. What’s disappointing is that there are no desserts. And while the bar menu is still being prepared, there’s no list of soft drinks available currently. Minor glitches aside, this is a must-visit restaurant for the sheer quality of food and its comparatively low pricing.
