Momos, chai make banta thanda

Pop goes the weasel for DU’s bantawalas this season, thanks to rain. Generally the top earners during the admission season at Delhi University’s North Campus, the bantawalas, or sellers of soda-lime fizz, are reporting bad business owing to the pre-monsoon showers. Instead, it’s the momo
and tea vendors who’re raking in the moolah with the mercury having dropped over the past few days.
“Vaise toh iss time 200 bottle roz bik jaate hain, lekin iss saal baarish ke chalte business bigad gaya (We generally sell around 200 bottles every day during this period, but rain played spoilsport),” says Prem Pal, a 21-year-old bantawala who sits outside the Arts faculty.
Vijay Kumar, another bantawala, is relieved that the sun is out. “We didn’t set up shop for three days as it was raining. We’re back now.”
The momo and chai sellers, on the other hand, can’t stop thanking the rain gods. “On an average, we earn Rs. 1,500 on a hot summer’s day, but we earned around Rs. 3,000 the last few days because rain made the weather cool,” says Mahesh Gurung, a momo vendor. “Ab garmi kam hai, chai ka demand zyaada hai,” adds Vishnu Sharma, a chaiwala.
