Mumbai eateries: It’s time to taste

After a month’s delay, the global series of food and drink festivals is ready to debut in India: Taste Of Mumbai takes place from March 22 to 24. While initially, the event was supposed to take place on February 22, it was delayed due to the anticipated bandh around the time.The culinary event is now back to enthrall city foodies with tasting stalls where top Mumbai eateries will showcase their creations and conduct live cooking sessions that will be hosted by celebrated chefs. “The whole interest in food has made it
entertaining. It’s something people want to watch, even if they don’t cook themselves,” Karen Anand, one of the directors of ASK For Food (the organisers) told us earlier.

While tasting portions will be priced between Rs. 100 to Rs. 250, each city eatery will highlight an iconic dish of their choice for R500. Each day has been split into two parts — 12 pm to 4 pm will make up the day session; and 6 pm to 10 pm, the evening session.

Nadia Lim
This celebrated chef and dietician became a household name after she won the television show, MasterChef New Zealand. Author Nadia Lim, who is best known for creating original dishes fusing Asian and western cuisine, keeps health in mind while cooking. After the release of her bestselling cookbook, Nadia’s Kitchen, she has worked with various charities to help children and adults improve their diets. Vivek Singh
He spurned family expectations to become a chef. After culinary college, Vivek Singh joined the Oberoi Hotel group as a specialist in Indian cuisine. He then moved to the Grand Hotel in Kolkata, where he was fast-tracked to become the Indian chef of The Oberoi’s flag ship Rajvilas in Jaipur — at the age of 26. His biggest break came when he was approached by The Cinnamon Club to marry Indian flavours with western culinary styles. Since it’s opening in 2001, the restaurant has been redefining Indian cooking. Vivek has also penned recipe books, like The Cinnamon Club Cookbook in 2003 and The Cinnamon Club Seafood Cookbook and Curry  in 2006. Ritu Dalmia
Without any formal training, Ritu Dalmia started her first restaurant, Mezzaluna, at the age of 21. Three years later, she set up Vama in London. The restaurant went on to become popular with the likes of Bryan Adams and Maggie Smith, among others, becoming regulars. Currently, one of Delhi’s most popular Italian restaurants, Diva, is driven by Ritu’s natural sense of taste. She is also responsible for the Café at the Italian Culture Centre. In all, she owns five eateries as part of Diva restaurants. Apart from hosting the TV shows Italian Khana and Travelling Diva, Ritu has also authored two cookbooks by the same name. Diva has won the Hindustan Times’ HT City Award for the last four years. She was also awarded the prestigious Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity. Jehangir Mehta
An alumnus of the Culinary Institute of America as well as the Hotel Management, Catering, Technology and Applied Nutrition in Mumbai, Jehangir Mehta is best known as the runner-up on TV show Next Iron Chef 2009. He runs two restaurants, Graffiti and Mehtaphor in Manhattan, with another one, Graffiti Me, set to open soon. He has also been the pastry chef at acclaimed NYC restaurants like Aix, Union Pacific, Mercer Kitchen, Compass, and Jean-Georges.Besides writing a book (Mantra: The Rules of Indulgence), he runs a successful event management business, which caters at private events and weddings.Jehangir is also passionate about ensuring that kids eat healthy food, which is why 10 years ago, he started Candy Camp - a cooking class for children. He also runs an initiative called Gastro Kids After School. Jehangir’s restaurants serve dishes that have been inspired by his love for spices and ingredients.
