There’s no better day than today to take a step towards saving the earth, and believe us, it’s easy. World Environment Day, celebrated every year on June 5 to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action, brings forth many a question about how the city uses its natural resources.
If you’re wondering where to start, a simple step would be to monitor your own social media activity, that you perhaps wrote off as eco-friendly anyway. Truth is, every click that we make or the information that we put up on social media is stored at data centres, whose servers require to be pumped with cool air to keep them operational. Many of the social media firms use coal to generate this electricity, and this emits harmful carbon dioxide. Read on for other ways to make a difference.
And we, at Hindustan Times, are trying to find the answers.
We’ve been collecting and getting paper recycled from across Lucknow, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. These waste papers were otherwise used in packing fruit, crockery and shoes, and then got so soiled that they could not be recycled. At present, Hindustan Times is saving more than 7,000 trees a month by recycling paper. Because when business meets the environment, everyone wins.

Use solar panels. Even while you are away on vacation, it is a good idea to install solar panels at home which pump the electricity generated this way back to the central grid while you are away holidaying. You are not only generating electricity but also making the most of the Delhi heat. Imagine the amount of solar energy that can be generated at 46 degrees!
