As the age old adage goes: it’s better to be safe than sorry. Here are some safety measures that you must swear by, especially if you are a woman staying alone:

Always be alert: Keep an eye on your environment; look out for suspicious characters, possible danger, etc. Never assume that your area has been ‘safe’ thus far so it will continue to be so.

Look confident: Walk smartly with your arms swinging by your sides. Avoid slouching or walking like a victim. This makes you an easy target for attackers.

Check before opening the door: Do not open the door to your home without first checking from a window or peephole. Always ask before opening and verify who it is. Don’t open doors to random salesmen at odd hours.

Choose an appropriate seat: If you are riding by public transport, do not sit on the window seat, as you may be blocked in by a potential assailant. Choose the section of the bus/train that is most crowded.

Never leave your car door unlocked: Attackers have been known to lie inside open cars, waiting for such an opportunity.

Be careful in parking lots: Ask someone to escort you to your car. Between cars and inside cars, it’s easy for someone to hide and wait.

Taxi norms: Always check the identification of the driver (usually located near the visor) and ensure that it matches the driver. Choose the adjacent seat. Avoid flagging taxis. Always order taxis, so the driver can be traced if something happens.

Don’t listen to music while travelling: If you’re used to listening to music on your ear plugs while outside, drop this habit. With the music on, you cannot hear the approach of a possible attacker.
