In a price comparison report of hotel rooms around the world, one US city came out on top for being at once the most expensive US destination, the top shopping city in the world, and the best city for nightlife. If you guessed New York, you’re bang on.

In Hotels.com’s annual Hotel Price Index report, which looked at the average hotel room prices in cities around the world during 2012, the Big Apple snagged the top spot across three categories based on pricing, survey results and and expert input.

The report rated more than 155,000 properties around the world.

Overall, at £179 (€207), New York City came in third place after Monte Carlo and Muscat, Oman for being the most expensive city in the world for hotel accommodations in 2012.

In the category of best nightlife, as voted by more than 27,000 travelers around the world, New York took the top spot, followed by Las Vegas, London, Paris and Barcelona.

After New York, accommodations in Key West, Florida were the most expensive in the US, averaging about £154 (€178), followed by Boston, San Francisco and Miami.

And when it comes to shopping destinations, experts at Hotels.com put New York out in front, followed by Singapore -- home to an affluent community and land of luxury brand names.

The top shopping cities are ranked in descending order of most to least expensive cities for hotels.

Rounding out the top five shopping destinations were Dubai, Hong Kong and Paris.
