Adding to their already existing array of services like selling textile products and furniture, the Tihar Haat on Jail Road has got an all-new food court. Although it is still in experimental stage, the one-month old service is already a hit. The first facility to open at the court is a 50-seater restaurant, serving a variety of North Indian fare. Getting over 50 orders a day, mostly from visiting customers, the outlet also offers free home delivery up to 3 km.
The dhaba-style vegetarian restaurant is open between 11am and 3pm for lunch and between 7pm and 10pm for dinner. It includes snacks like samosa (Rs. 10), kachori (Rs. 10), paneer pakoda (Rs. 18) and paneer cutlet (Rs. 18). Then there are rice meals like kadhi chawal (Rs. 65) and veg biryani with raita (Rs. 65).
There’s also a deluxe thali (priced at Rs. 150, and just about sufficient for two people), which includes naan, parantha, dal makhani, paneer curry, seasonal veg curry, pulao, raita, salad, papad, pickle and sweet of the day. There is also a range of beverages including cold coffee (Rs. 40) and kesariya lassi (Rs. 45).
Behind the diner is also a noble cause, with eight Tihar inmates, trained by a hotel management institute, doubling as both cooks and waiters. The authorities at Tihar Jail are under the process of coming up with a few other eateries, including a South Indian joint and an ice-cream parlour.
Sunil Gupta, a senior official with Tihar, who also looks after the running of the food court, tells us, “There is a good cause behind running the facility. It is to empower some of the inmates. It is also a great addition to the already thriving Tihar Haat, which sells different kinds of merchandise.”
