It's still the first week of the New Year and chances are that you're still in partying mode. So, how to avoid hangovers without dampening the party? Here's a rundown on how to beat the hangover this New Year.

"Alcohol often becomes the spoilsport for most of the parties. But there are ways to get rid of the hangover and prevent one from being too inebriated," Jyoti Arora from the nutrition and dietetics team of the Artemis Health Institute in Gurgaon told IANS.

"Alcohol causes dehydration, so it's advised to consume fluids in the form of water, juice or shakes before stepping out to party," he added.

Teens drinkingExperts warn people not to consume alcohol on an empty stomach.

"Before drinking, make sure you eat snacks which are high in fats like pizza, cream roll and cheese sandwich, as it will slow down the absorption of alcohol," Arora explained.

While doctors pitch in with avoid-hangover regimes, youngsters seem most unconcerned this party season.

"Alcohol is not just about New Year parties, it goes for other celebrations also. And to be honest, nobody really cares so much after getting high and drunk," said Sahil Minocha, a 21-year-old college-goer in Delhi.

"It depends from person to person on how concerned one is about a post-alcohol hangover. But to hear that precautions exist is good for safety," he added.

Experts also tell you how to avoid the post-party hangovers that people often ignore.

"A high carbohydrate breakfast works better after alcohol consumption. Coffee is a strict no-no as caffeine works as a dehydrating agent, just like alcohol," said Namita Grover, a dietician from a government hospital.

"The most effective remedy for alcohol hangover is to rest and drink lukewarm water with a spoonful of honey," she said.

Interestingly, hotels also have on their platter unique 'hangover-recovery' dishes.

"We have hangover-recovery recipes such as 'mushroom trio and asparagus risotto' that is helpful in recovering from a hangover. The cheese content in the dish lines the stomach and reduces the effect of alcohol immediately," Metropolitan Hotel's chef Tarun Kapoor told IANS.

"Dishes which are high in protein also help the body to recover fast from the damage done by alcohol," he added.

But the older generation maintains its idea of celebrating and saying goodbye to the old year.

"Booze parties and blaring music have replaced our snacks and groundnuts meant for the New Year parties. But we still advise our children to take care of their alcohol content as it might be harmful," said 54-year-old Sarla Vijay of Vasant Kunj.
