The number of tongue and mouth cancers has also increased over the last few years,” said Dr PK Julka, Head of Radiation Oncology, Dr BR Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS.

Meanwhile, crude mortality rate (CMR) per 100,000 persons for lung cancer among males is 1.5 and 1.7 in 2008 and 2009 respectively. However, in women, CMR per 100,000 persons was highest among breast cancer cases with 1.3 and 1.4 in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Among women, breast cancer was the leading site with 27.1% followed by cervix (11.4%), ovary (6.9%), gallbladder (6.6%) and uterus (3.4%).
