Human Genome Sciences Inc. said on Wednesday it had received US government approval to begin tests on humans of a drug aimed at preventing and treating anthrax infections.

The company said the US Food and Drug Administration gave clearance for the testing of ABthrax on humans, which the company has said protected some animals from anthrax, a potentially deadly germ used in the anthrax mailings of late 2001 in the United States.

Human Genome, based in Rockville, Maryland, said ABthrax could be available for emergency use as early as the end of next year, if the drug gets proper funding.

"It is important to note that our ability to carry this project forward is ultimately dependent on the government's willingness to commit to purchasing ABthrax," William Haseltine, chairman and chief executive of Human Genome, said in a statement.
