Stay cool, Bollywood style

How do the stars stay cool in this heat? We speak to a few of them to find out their favourite summer drinks.

“In summers, I drink lots of water to keep myself hydrated. I also like nimbu pani (fresh lime water) as it’s very refreshing.”

“As a child, I loved sugarcane juice. My father would treat me to a glass of it. Some time back, I was into fresh lime with water, not soda; I don’t like aerated drinks or sodas. Currently, I am into freshly made watermelon juice.”

Karisma Kapoor
“The classic lassi is a healthy option. As a child, I loved drinking lemon-barley water.”

“My favourite summer drink as a child was homemade lemonade or cold coffee. My lemonade would have a sprinkling of desi jeera (cumin) and salt, while the cold coffee had a dash of chocolate sauce or ice cream. Both of them are healthy and refreshing drinks. Nowadays, I prefer lemon iced tea in the summer.”

“My all-time favourite summer coolers are nimbu pani and coconut water.”

“My favourite drink whether it is summer, winter, autumn, spring, 365 days of the year, is only whiskey, that too after sunset. Period.”

“I like plain lassi without sugar or salt. As a child, I loved nimbu pani with some fresh mint leaves and pepper.”

“I love water, sparkling water, homemade nimbu pani and watermelon juice. As a child, I would freeze cola in a glass with a spoon in it and keep it in the freezer and have cola ice-cream when I returned from school.”

“I love homemade nimbu pani. I also like to drink cola. During my childhood I would have a lot of mango milkshake with loads of ice, but not anymore as I have realised that mangoes generate a lot of heat. I have banana milkshake instead.”

Bipasha Basu
“I like to drink lots of coconut water, lassi and chaas (buttermilk) during summer. Of course, I tend to drink lots of water also. During my childhood we were never allowed aerated drinks, so I mostly had fresh fruit juices. But ice is a strict no-no for me.”

“I keep sipping on nimbu pani all the time. I also like to have jal-jeera, but my top favourite is lemon iced tea. As a child, we lived in Juhu and my dad would often take me to Juhu beach for falooda and neera (it is made from toddy).”

Boman Irani
“I like nothing better than a chilled beer with a scrumptious dhansak (Parsi curry) followed by a siesta on a hot summer’s day. When I’m shooting, I sip on coconut water. My favourite chilled drink is watermelon juice with frozen pieces of watermelon. During my childhood I recall eating watermelon. I would scoop out the watermelon with my fingers and wear the outer shell on my head.”

“I love drinking lots of water during summers. I am not a juice person.”

“Bel ka sherbet is very good for your stomach during the summer. It comes from Bikaner for Dharamji, and he gives it to me. It is served with lots of ice and has a lovely flavour. I also love Kesar sherbet, but I have it occasionally as it contains a lot of sugar.”

Bel Ka Sherbet
Ingredients:
1 medium-sized Bel (wood apple) n 1/2 tsp cumin seed powder (freshly roasted and powdered) n 1/2 tsp black salt
2 glasses water
2 tsp sugar

Method:
Break open the bel and take out the pulp with a spoon. Soak the pulp in water for 2-3 hours and sieve it to remove seeds. Add sugar, black salt, cumin seed powder and mix well. Serve chilled in tall glasses.

Ayushmann Khurrana
“I relish the north Indian summer drink, chabeel. It is made of rose syrup, water and milk.”

Chabeel
Ingredients
2 glasses cold milk n 4-5 tbsp rose syrup (adjust as per taste) n 1 glass ice cubes

Method
Pour milk and rose syrup in a steel vessel filled with ice cubes. Mix well and serve chilled.
