Top 10 fitness trends for 2013

A new survey of fitness trends finds that you can put away your fancy fitness gadgets and get back to basics — push-ups, planks and squats will be some of the most popular exercises for the coming year.

The American College of Sports Medicine states that resistance training using your own body weight will take centrestage in the fitness scene. “Body weight exercises are a proven way to get and stay fit,” says survey author Dr Walt Thompson of Georgia State University.

The top ten fitness trends predicted for 2013 are as follows:
1. Educated and certified fitness professionals  
The need for experienced and certified fitness professionals is on the rise. In the US for example, jobs for fitness workers are expected to rise faster than that of other occupations, according to the US Labor Department.

2. Strength training 
In the no. 2 slot for second year in a row, strength training will be a strong trend for men, women, kids and seniors.

3. Body weight training 
It uses minimal equipment and includes push-ups and pull-ups.

4. Children and obesity 
Another major trend will be exercise programmes for kids struggling with weight issues. Schools are incorporating several exercises to help kids combat obesity.

5. Weight loss exercise 
Also a popular trend, people continue to exercise to help lose weight.

6. Fitness programmes for older adults 
Fitness programmes for seniors will be popular.

7. Personal training 
More attention will be paid to certification of personal trainers and using their expertise in community-based programmes, corporate wellness and medical fitness programmes.

8. Functional fitness 
Functional fitness uses strength training to improve balance, coordination and endurance.

9. Core training 
It focuses on strengthening stabilising muscles of the abdomen, thorax and back.

10. Group personal training
It allows personalised fitness at an economical cost.
