A 19-year-old student, who had jumped from the third floor of her college building on Tuesday allegedly to escape ragging, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Lucknow on Friday.
Deceased Sumbul Ishaq, a B Pharma student of Dr MC Saxena Institute of Engineering and Management in Lucknow, was put on ventilator on Thursday night after her condition worsened.
“We did our best to save her but she succumbed during the wee hours on Friday,” a trauma centre doctor said.
The student had suffered grievous injuries on her head and chin after she jumped from the third flood the college building in Thakurganj, allegedly to escape severe ragging by unnamed seniors.
In his FIR, Sumbul’s father Abu Ishaq had blamed the institute and “unidentified students” for her extreme step. He said he had earlier complained twice to the institute’s officials about persistent ragging by senior students, but they paid no heed to his complaints.
Following the woman’s death, family-members also alleged negligence by doctors in her treatment but medical officers denied the allegations and said the woman was continuously under supervision.
“The woman was kept in the surgical ward so that she would remain under continuous supervision,” a hospital doctor said.
Station officer of Thakurganj police station SK Yadav said that after the death of the student “the case would now be altered from attempt to abetment of suicide to abetment of suicide.”
Sections of the Anti-Ragging Act would also be included in the FIR, he added.
