Six persons including four minors died and three were injured in a fire outbreak at a school bag manufacturing unit in the city around 1.30am on Sunday.
According to the police, five employees of the unit, in Dugawa under Naka police station limits, died due to suffocation and one succumbed to burn injuries.
Police suspect a short circuit triggered the fire, which trapped the employees sleeping on the second and third floor of the three-storey building. Unit owner Sabir Ali has been detained.
SD Dwivedi, station house officer of Naka police station, said the fire broke out on the second floor where inflammable raw material was stored.
The deceased were identified as brothers Mohd Zahirudeen, 18, and Sirajudeen, 15, their cousin Naeemudeen, 14, Mohd Afaq, 15, Sahab-e-alam, 15, and Farooq Ali, 50.
Locals said fire tenders could not enter the narrow lane where the unit, functioning in the area since 2005, is located. Locals helped douse the flames by throwing water from buckets.
