A couple and their one-year-old son were critically injured when the woman set herself ablaze after setting fire to her husband and son in Telibagh locality of Cantonment police area during the wee hours on Thursday. She took the extreme step after an argument with her husband over a petty issue.
The injured, Shyam Sunder Dixit, 33, and Soni Dixit, 31, are undergoing treatment at Sushrat Institute of Plastic Surgery (SIPS) where their condition is stated to be critical. The boy Surya Dixit is undergoing treatment in Civil Hospital.
The incident took place when the husband, who works in a bread manufacturing unit, got engaged in argument with his wife around 1:30 am. In a fit of anger, the woman set a fire after she poured kerosene oil on herself, her husband and her son. She even locked themselves inside a room before taking the extreme step,
Other family members of the victims rushed to rescue them. they could be taken out after breaking the doors of the room.
They were rushed to the Civil Hospital from where the couple was shifted to SIPS. The couple sustained severe burn injuries on their face, chest and other parts of the body. The boy also sustained burn injuries on his hands and forehead.
The man's elder brother Om Prakash Dixit's wife Kiran said the couple had strained relations for the last several months. “We ignored the matter initially as it happened between them frequently. We rushed to rescue them only after witnessing smoke coming out of their room,” says Kiran.
She said Soni also tried to set a fire to her elder son Som Dixit, 3, but his father rescued him as he threw him (Som) out of the room. The second son was also saved and only sustained minor injuries.
during the last 15 days, it is the third incident of its type in which husband or wive have self-immolated due to their strained relations. On March 21, a man Haripal, 38, set himself ablaze after setting a fire to her wife Raj Kumari, 32, and three children in a Talkatora locality.
The man died on the spot while his wife succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Their three children including two daughters Manasi (7) and Deepshikha (4) and son Shekhar (2) are still under going treatment in Civil Hospital.
Similarly, four of a family were burnt to death on March 18 when a woman Sheela Yadav, 25, set herself ablaze after setting a fire to her two sons Shubham, 7, and Nanku, 2, and a daughter Deepali, 5, in a Chinhat locality. She took the grave step after having argument with her husband.
