A prisoner accused of throwing acid on a minor girl in February this year, hanged himself with a muffler in barrack number 91 of Lucknow jail on Sunday night.

The jail authorities started a search as the count of prisoners showed one less and came to know of the suicide. The deceased Riyaz Ahmad was a native of Maharajganj and had thrown acid on his niece on February 1.

Family members of Riyaz alleged that the family of the girl had managed to get Riyaz eliminated and that he could not commit suicide. Father of the deceased Amir Ahmad said that they were all confident that his son would get bail. Then how could he commit suicide?

During the post mortem examination conducted on Monday, death by hanging was confirmed.

According to the statement of the victim, Riyaz dragged her inside a car near Avadh hospital crossing on the day and took her towards Shaheed Path. Suddenly he stopped the car at Aurangabad in Ashiyana police area and threw acid on her. Riyaz was arrested a week later and was in jail since then.

The other prisoners told police that for the past two days, Riyaz was upset as he had come to know that the victim, his niece, had been conferred with a bravery award. The other prisoners told the cops that for the past few weeks, Riyaz had been disturbed.

Investigation is going on in the case as cops need to find an answer to how this suicide happened and was there no one around when Riyaz ended his life?
