Urban development minister Mohd Azam Khan on Monday blasted some senior officers for their absence from a meeting.
The minister virtually lost his cool and snubbed one special secretary. Khan had fixed three-day (August 27 to 29) meeting last week.
But when he reached the venue at the state secretariat two officers-- principal secretary urban development Praveer Kumar and secretary Sunita Chaturvedi were not present.
Khan said that when the date for the meeting was fixed in advance, why the officers did not turn up.
While Praveer Kumar had gone to attend a case in the high court in Allahabad, Sunita Chaturvedi was busy with a state assembly committee meeting.
The officers of local bodies had come from across the state for the meeting.
He said the officers’ absence was indeed very unfortunate and cancelled the meeting.
Later, an angry Khan told newsmen that he would not tolerate indiscipline.
The officers should either improve or be ready to face stern action, Khan said, adding initially the officers were scheduled to brief other officers.
But when the officers were absent, what could he do at the meeting, the minister said angrily and moved out of the conference hall.
The minister said that he was committed to ensuring discipline in the functioning of his department. To a question whether he would take any action against the particular officers, the minister said he was not “competent” to take action against them.
Row started when Khan, accompanied by special secretary SP Singh, entered the conference hall where on the dais there was seating arrangement for eight persons but only one officer was there.
Looking at the dais, the minister asked, “Where are others?” When special secretary Vishnu Swaroop Mishra tried to explain the absence of the officers, Khan snubbed him.
