After the recovery of B Tech practical answer-sheet bundle from a scrap dealer, the Babu Banarasi Das National Institute of Technology and Management, Lucknow got into a damage control exercise on Monday.
The institute management sacked the head of department concerned with immediate effect and ordered an external inquiry. It said an FIR was lodged with Chinhat police and the incident was an attempt of ‘some mischievous elements to malign the image of the college’.
Chairman of BBD group Akhilesh Das Gupta said the HoD was removed from the post and the then HoD of electronics and communication suspended. “An external inquiry under the chairmanship of Maj Gen VM Kalia has been instituted,” he said. Institute director Raghuvir Kumar said, “Some practical answer books were found missing from the college. Therefore action was necessary.” Das said the sanctity of the examinations could not be compromised with. “We strongly condemn the act and have ordered a high level inquiry. More heads might roll. Indiscipline will not be tolerated,” he said.
To further plug any loopholes in the system, the UPTU has constituted a committee to examine how to put an end to such things. “Our worry is how an answer-sheet went out without evaluation. The examiner is required to award marks then and there. It is a serious matter that here answer sheets came out without evaluation,” he said.
