To raise the standards of its courses, Lucknow University is offering just one Honours course in its Arts stream this year -- BA English. And this decision is already beginning to show some impact. Against sixty BA English (Honours) seats, LU has received 688 forms, which means about eleven candidates are vying for one seat.
The candidates have to opt one (Honours) subject and two subsidiary subjects in BA (Honours) Part I and II. Students will have to opt for two subsidiary subjects from a pool of six: Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Philosophy, Anthropology and Public Administration.
In BA (Hons) first and second year, there will be three papers in Honours subject and two papers of subsidiary subjects. In the Honours final year, there will be six papers of Honours subject.
“Students will be required to take twelve papers in all (compulsory and optional papers) in each of Honours course in three academic sessions. Honours course subject and subsidiary subject cannot be the same,” explained Prof Nishi Pandey, head of English department.
