In a shocking case of alleged medical negligence here on Thursday, a newborn baby was found to be alive hours after the doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital declared her ‘stillborn’.

The infant would probably have been buried alive had it not been for her father who insisted on seeing his daughter’s face before the cremation at Bhainsa Kund ground. When the father removed the shroud, he was shocked to see that his daughter was breathing.

A premature ‘stillborn’ baby girl was born to Vandana and Shiv Bhushan Pathak early on Thursday morning. The girl, who was also the couple’s first child, was delivered in the sixth month of Vandana’s pregnancy due to medical complications.

“When we took her to the cremation ground, I was surprised to see that the infant was breathing. When I told my father, he also checked and confirmed that the girl was alive. We immediately rushed her back to Lohia hospital around 8am,” said Pathak.

Doctors present in the emergency ward confirmed that the baby was alive and admitted her to neonatal ICU.

On getting to know that her daughter was alive, an extremely emotional Vandana could just say, “She is our first child.” As Vandana is not allowed to keep the child with her, the anxious mother keeps asking visiting relatives about the infant’s health every now and then.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities have set up a probe into the incident. “We have ordered an inquiry. If the child was alive, she should not have been declared dead,” said Dr Onkar Yadav, medical superintendent of Lohia hospital.

Vandana, 22, had tied the knot with Shiv Bhushan, 26, in May 2014. The couple resides in Shuklabazaar locality of Amethi district.
