Come Tuesday and Lucknow's Kakori block — hitherto famous for its kebabs and its place in India's freedom struggle — will have another claim to fame. Amitabh Bachhan, the Shahenshah of Bollywood, will formally own a plot in the land of Nawabs.
Amitabh recently purchased 24 bighas of agricultural land for more than Rs 3 crore in Muzaffarnagar village of Kakori — located on the outskirts of Lucknow. Bachchan got the transaction carried out through a power of attorney. The first deal was struck on May 21 for 2.403 hectares for Rs 1.55 crores while two other sales followed for 2.314 hectares and 1.227 hectares for Rs 1.48 crores.
The mutation — formal transfer of ownership in revenue records — of land will be formalised by the revenue department on Tuesday. While part of the land is in the joint name of his wife and himself, another plot was purchased in the name of his son Abhishek. The Bachchans paid through cheque and had applied for mutation recently.
No discrepancies were detected in the land deal and a mutation order in his name will be issued on Tuesday by the Naib Tehseeldar of Kakori.
"We have checked records with the stamps and registration office. Physical inspections were also done. All the papers have been found in order and the mutation will be done in Amitabh's name on Tuesday," said a district administration official.
The mutation comes after a recent controversy over buying farmland in Barabanki in violation of norms. Ironically, the SDM (sadar),Mahendra Singh, who will issue the mutation order on Tuesday, was responsible for scuttling Big B's attempt to secure a piece of land in Daulatpur village under Fatehpur tehseel of Barabanki district in 2006.
Mahendra, then posted as SDM Fatehpur, had reported irregularities in the land transfer.
Later, Amitabh along with his clan arrived in the same village on January 24, 2008 and promised a degree college in the name of his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai.
But village head Rajkumari approached a local court in Barabanki for forgery.
The matter is still pending in court.
