Police on Monday fired tear gas shells and used water canons to disperse agitated BJP workers who were marching towards the state assembly heer to protest against the policies of the BSP government. Senior BJP leaders including Kalraj Mishra, Om Prakash Singh, and Lalji Tandon along with party MLAs and workers courted arrest during the march called by the saffron party under its "Save Uttar Pradesh" agitation. However, they were later released.
Police fired tear gas shells and used water canons to quell the protesters who tried to break police barricades. Addressing party workers, senior leader Lalji Tandon claimed that only the BJP that can give a strong alternative to the BSP and SP and alleged that the two parties had ruined the state.
Hitting out at the two, the BJP leader alleged that they were busy in mudslinging and had completely ignored development issues.
"Today the MLAs of the ruling party are involved in murders of engineers, an atmosphere of fear is prevalent throughout the state," he alleged. "We have to save the country and the state from the clutches of these parties." He lashed out at Mayawati government on its penchant for erecting the BSP leader's statues and memorials and accused it of abusing laws to target detractors. "What will the dalits get from the big monuments Mayawati is building, will they (monuments) get them a square meal a day or employment. It is a sheer waste of public money."
